The 2023 Season Begins
Posted by Kate Rise on
Like the flip of a switch, the island has come alive after the long winter. Happy greetings of “Welcome back!” are often accompanied with a big hug. The island horses have returned from their much-deserved winter rest. Watching them being led through the streets from the ferry to the stables is always a highlight of Spring. The green grass of Marquette Park is a welcome sight from the grays and browns of winter. Daffodils and other spring bulbs are beginning to bloom around the island. With the Soo Locks open for the season, the freighters can be seen passing through the Straits once again. Yes, spring is finally here bringing a new season and we couldn’t be more thrilled! In the days before opening we had several final tasks. Our Poppins sign was hung high above the coral door with the some help as we planted colorful pansies in the window box next door at Poppins[Home]. The May window display was installed at Poppins with an art theme. It showcases some of our favorite note cards as framed works of art that are available in the shop as well as our online store.
One of our favorite northern Michigan artists, Amanda Bur, released her Mackinac Island Collection this month. The 2024 calendar is already a customer favorite featuring 12 beautiful Mackinac Island scenes.“A New Year”, January’s winter scene of Arch Rock, was inspired by a photograph taken by our Amanda, who is celebrating her 10th season at Poppins! You can find Amanda Bur’s art prints and note cards at both Poppins and Poppins[Home]. Hemlock bandanas are a returning favorite to the shops. It is a woman-owned shop, and Beth designs each bandana in her home studio with paint and paper. The unique designs are screen printed by hand and made of 100% cotton. They can be used as gift wrap, a baby bib, picnic napkin, or the classic neck scarf. Customers often buy more than one as it is hard to choose from the many pretty designs!
May is a wonderful time to visit the island. Be sure and stop in when you visit and we will show you Amanda Bur's art and Hemlock bandanas in person. Hope to see you soon!
Happy Spring!
